USA and China meet for third time this year

Lausanne, Switzerland, September 2, 2017 - USA and China meet for the fourth time in the history of the 2017 FIVB World Grand Champions Cup Tuesday in Tokyo, with the Asian side enjoying a slight lead of 2-1 in the series. It is the third time that USA and China go head-to-head this year, after splitting wins in the 2017 FIVB World Grand Prix.

Head-to-Head
• This will be the fourth match between United States and China at the World Grand Champions Cup.
• China won the first two meetings in 1993 and 2001, both 3-1. United States won in straight sets in 2005.
• Their most recent encounters came at the 2017 World Grand Prix. In the opening weekend, United States won in straight sets. One week later, China took revenge winning in five sets.
• This is a replay of the 2014 World Championship final in which United States proved too strong (3-1).

United States
• United States will participate for the fifth time in the World Grand Champions Cup. Since 2001, they only missed out the 2009 tournament.
• United States finished in second place in both 2005 and 2013, their best result in the competition.
• Only in 2005, United States won their opener in the tournament, winning in straight sets against Korea.
• USA have won 10 and lost 10 matches in World Grand Champions Cup history.

China
• China will participate for the fifth time but have not participated since 2005.
• They won the World Grand Champions Cup once in 2001. In the inaugural season they finished as runners up, while they claimed bronze in their last participation in 2005.
• Only Brazil (G2-S1-B1) claimed more medals at the World Grand Champions Cup than China (Russia also three, G1-S1-B1).
• Only in 1993, China won their opening match, defeating Russia in five sets on day one of the inaugural edition.
