Tokyo – a world-renowned metropolis and the center of Japan’s economy, politics, and culture – is a city that has enjoyed a long history of prosperity. Formerly known as Edo, it has been the de facto seat of government since 1603 when Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu made the city his headquarters. It is currently the seat of the Emperor of Japan and the Japanese government.
Tokyo has a strong international sporting history, becoming the first Asian city to host the summer Olympic Games in 1964. Tokyo has seen its fair share of the FIVB volleyball events, having already been a host city for the 2005, 2009 and 2013 FIVB World Grand Champions Cup, for the 2010 Women's World Championship and for the 2015 FIVB World Cup. The city also hosted the FIVB World Grand Prix Group 1 Finals in 2014 and was the site of the FIVB World Congress in 2006.
Venue : Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium
The Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium was one of the sites of the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games but it has been completely rebuilt since by architect Fumihiko Maki, who gave the gymnasium its futuristic design. The venue which, in addition to volleyball, regularly holds figure skating, tennis and other sports events, features state-of-the-art equipment and has a seating capacity of 10,000.
