Russia

Russia have won a medal of each colour in the FIVB Women’s World Grand Champions Cup in their five appearances in the competition – though their last showing was a fourth place in 2013.
Taking into account their years competing as the Soviet Union, the Russians are the most successful nation in the history of women’s volleyball. They claimed Olympic gold medals in Mexico City 1968, Munich 1972, Moscow 1980 and Seoul 1988. They have also won the FIVB World Championship seven times and the European Championship on 18 occasions and triumphed in the 1973 FIVB World Cup and the 1997 FIVB Grand Champions Cup. In their most recent appearances Russia finished fifth at the 2014 World Championship and were knocked out by Serbia in the quarterfinals of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Coach

Kuziutkin Vladimir

Kuziutkin Vladimir

Vladimir Kuzyutkin was named head coach of Russia’s women’s National Team this year, replacing Yuri Marichev. It is the 69-year-old’s second stint at the helm of Russia’s women, after coaching the side to the silver medal at the 2009 FIVB World Grand Prix followed by the 2010 FIVB World Championship title. He had previously served as head coach of the women’s National Team of Bulgaria, in 2014. Born in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Kuzyutkin began his playing career in the 1960s in Rostov and by the 1980s had switched to coaching. In his earlier coaching career he worked in Turkey with Emlakbank Ankara, Eczacibasi Istanbul and Gunes Sigorta. Upon returning to Russia, he worked as coach of several men’s and women’s clubs.
